April 5, 2017 – Reagan high school’s tennis team had 6 players advance to Regionals. #1 seed Luke Godwin (Sr.) took 1st place in boys singles beating last years district champ Chris Doyle (Jr.) from Churchill H.S. 6-4, 6-1. Luke recovered from a slow start at 1-3 in the 1st set to dominating the rest of the match by winning 11 of the next 13 games to close out the match. Luke Godwin’s sister and also #1 seed Bailey Godwin (Fr.) took 1st place in girls singles defeating Isabela Young (Sr.) from Churchill H.S. 6-0, 6-1. Bailey only dropped 2 games the entire tournament. John Ayers (Sr.) and Grace Landwehr (Sr.) proved they were the team to beat when they took 1st place in mixed doubles defeating Cario/Norment from MacArthur H.S. 6-1, 6-2 with powerful ground strokes from John and a great volley game from Grace. In girls doubles, Kyndall Quiroz (Fr.) and Natalie Gonzalez (Sr.) took 2nd place when they lost a tight match to top seeds Mariana Quetzeri (Sr.) and Hope Love (Jr.) from Johnson H.S. 7-6, 7-6. Kyndall and Natalie then won the playback against teammates Nishika Peeris (Jr.) and Jessica Hamden (Jr.) for 2nd place to advance to Regionals. #1 seed Cameron Larue (Sr.) and Justin Kiser (Jr.) fell short of qualifying for Regionals when they lost the playback for 2nd place in a tight battle to Murray/McCormick from Churchill high school in boys doubles 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. This match was the final match for Cameron who played a very important role as a starter this year for Reagan high school. Regionals will be played at McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio April 18-19.
