February 2, 2024

The varsity wrestling teams competed in the District 15-6A tournament Wed and Thursday at Littlejohn Gymnasium.  The boys narrowly placed 3rd and had 8 placers with 9 Regional qualifiers. The injury depleted girls team still was able to have 2 placers and 3 Regional qualifiers.

First place finishers:

Sr Bryce Whitethorn (126) placed first with a hard fought 2-0 finals match after cruising to victories in his first 2 matches.

Jr Grant Schneiders (144) had a dominating finals win 6-0, after pinning 2 opponents and winning by major decision in another.

So Shobhana Spielmann (107) continued to dominate pinning her finals opponent in 43 seconds after pinning her previous two opponents.

Second place finishers:

Sr Connor OBrien (132) narrowly dropped his finals match 1-2 with a controversial last second failure to award reversal points.

Sr Ben Taylor (120) also narrowly missed out on first falling 4-5, running out of time to get the last point to send it to overtime.

So Sebastian Rangel (190) battled his finals match and seemed to be a second away from a pin victory until ultimately falling in the waning minutes of the 3rd period.

Third place finishers:

Sr Noah Hyslop (175) after dropping his first quarterfinal match battled up the back of the bracket pinning all his opponents including to secure his top-3 finish.

So Caedmon Garcia (215) won third in a dramatic tie breaker finish (wrestling version of double overtime) with a reversal. He previously pinned all his opponents before and after dropping his semifinal match.

So Mekyela Garcia (152) won third with a pin, after pinning all her opponents before and after dropping her semifinal match.

Fourth place finishers:

Jr Max Pechman (113) narrowly missed out on third place with the match at 0-0 going into sudden victory overtime but just coming up short.

So Hannah Dunn (132) secured her fourth place by battling up the back of the bracket.  After falling in the consolation semifinals, she rallied to victory in her 5th place match pinning her opponent. She was then able to challenge  the fourth place wrestler, pinning her in the first period to get the Regional qualifying spot.

Regional Alternate:

Jr Luke Hall (157) secured 5th place but was unable to compete for fourth due to wrestle back rules.

Win or lose, every wrestler gave it their all and we are proud of how the teams competed all year.  On to Region 4-6A  Finals next Friday and Saturday at Littlejohn Gymnasium at Blossom. Strike’em.
