November 13, 2024

Senior Montserrat (Montse) Spielmann signed a National Letter of Intent to swim in college in a ceremony today alongside her parents Rodolfo Spielmann and Sole Miguel, her brother Diego Spielmann, and the Reagan Aquatics’ Head Coach Michael Rourke (not pictured).  With a stroke of a pen, Spielmann officially committed to further her academic and swim career at the University of Michigan, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 top-tier school in the Big Ten Conference.

“Montse has been a pillar of the Reagan Aquatics team since her freshman year,” Rourke said. “She continuously embodies the idea of what it means to be a Reagan Rattler.”

A Reagan Swim and Dive Varsity Letterman all four years in high school and a 3-time State Qualifier to date, Spielmann has established herself as an invaluable powerhouse on the team. She is a 7-time Reagan High School swim record holder, earned an amazing 27 High School Championship Medals, is a two-time 6a Texas State winner in the 100fly, and a two-time 6a Texas State medalist in the 200 free. As a top swimmer in the State, Spielmann also earned the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite Team twice, Texas Interscholastic Swimming Association All-State for top 16 swims in Texas 13 times, and National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association All-American for top 100 swims in the U.S. 12 times. A dual citizenship holder, Spielmann was also chosen for the Chilean National Team, earning 5 Chilean records as well.

“Montse is one of the most gifted athletes I have ever worked with, and it doesn’t just stop in the pool,” Rourke said.  A motivating force and incredible role model for others on the award-winning Reagan team, Spielmann earned National-level Scholastic All-American recognition 3 times to date, was selected to serve as team captain her Junior and Senior year, earned Reagan’s student-athlete MVP award in 2023 and 2024, and received a Team Character award for her work with the community.  Also a local phenomenon, Spielmann was voted the San Antonio Express-News Swimmer of the Year in 2024 and earned SOY finalist in 2023. “I am proud of what she has accomplished and know she will keep representing at the next level,” Rourke concluded.

Bryon Tansel, associate head coach of the University of Michigan’s men’s and women’s swim and dive team, reflected on all that Spielmann brings to the already successful program.  “We are super excited to bring in Montse to join our women’s swimming and diving program at the University of Michigan,” Tansel said.  “She brings a great athletic skill set, the ability to contribute immediately, along with a wonderful personality to build upon our culture of TEAM! We’re confident she’ll bring an elite level of ambition and drive into the pool and classroom. Go Blue!”
