At 9:45am Saturday at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin, Senior Rattler Gavin Chapa placed 4th in State in the 3200m with a PR time of 9:00.57. Ten and a half hours later he was back on the track for the 1600m where he finished 6th place.
Next year Chapa is exchanging Reagan Green for Texas A&M Maroon, but before that he has some more distance to cover. “I am so blessed to have had the opportunity of going to State again,” Chapa reflected. “Despite the UIL Season coming to an end, I will continue running my Club Track Season where I will train until the Nike Outdoor Nationals June 19-22.” Afterwards he will take a week off and then go staight into training for the upcoming Cross Country season with A&M.
Currently Chapa holds the Reagan all-time record in the 5K with a time of 14:27, as well as the Reagan all-time record in the 1600m with a time of 4:07.82. “Gavin’s dedication has transformed him from a promising young talent into one of Texas’ elite distance runners,” said Head Coach Rachel Freeman. “He has set a standard of excellence that will inspire future generations of runners; we thank him for his unwavering commitment, outstanding achievements, and the memorable mark he has left on our program.”
