Russ Pederson Results: Boys 1st Place, Girls 5th Place

December 15, 2024

Last Friday and Saturday Reagan Rattler wrestlers showed their stuff at Johnson High School at the annual Russ Pederson Tournament. Named for the Godfather of South Texas wrestling, this tournament has historically been one of our district’s most competitive, this year hosting 24 Boys’ Teams and 27 Girls’ Teams.

The Girls placed 5th with 89 points.
JUNIOR SHOBHANA SPIELMANN (114#) again dominated the tournament – winning her weight class with 5 first period pins, earning 36 team points. No stranger to getting her hand raised, Spielmann also surpassed her 100TH VARSITY WIN early in her junior year, the first Rattler to do that.
JUNIOR MEKYELA GARCIA (165#) placed 2nd earning 18 team points. Garcia pinned her first opponent in the first period and won the semi-final by injury default. She fought hard in the finals but came up short, taking home the silver medal.

The Boys won the tournament with 164 points – edging out the host Johnson by 8 points.
SENIOR CAPTAIN GRANT SCHNIEDERS (150#) won his weight class earning 26.5 team points. Schnieders made it look easy winning 2 matches by pin, 1 by major decision and 1 by tech fall.
JUNIOR CAEDMON GARCIA (285#) took 2nd, scoring 21 team points. Garcia found himself in the finals with 2 pins and a major decision, but was unable to come out on top and took home 2nd place.
JUNIOR SEBASTIAN RANGEL (190#) placed 3rd, scoring 19.5 team points. Rangel won his first two matches by pin and tech fall but dropped the semifinal. He then pinned his way to a 3rd place medal.
SENIOR BRYSON BJORKMAN (175#) took 3rd place, scoring 19 team points. Bjorkman won his first match with a high scoring 17-12 decision, then lost his second match. On the back side of the bracket he marched to 3rd place with 2 pins, a medical forfeit and a major decision.
SENIOR CAPTAIN MAX PECHMAN (113#)
placed 3rd, scoring 15 team points. Pechman started the tournament with a first period pin, then dropped his second match. Pechman then worked 2 second period tech falls to take home the bronze.
