Rattler Wrestling Varsity Boys handily won the Charger Classic held at Churchill High School last Saturday, accumulating 196.5 points – a dominant 18 points ahead of the 2nd place team.
Junior Nathan Almaguer earned 26 team points and 1st place at 152#. Almaguer owned his bracket with a 2nd period pin followed by 2 x 1st period pins to win 1st place.
Sophomore Connor O’Brien earned 25.5 team points and 1st place at 113#. O’Brien found himself in the finals after 2 pins and a tech fall, and was able to pull out a first place 7-5 decision getting the 2 point reveral with 14 seconds left.
Junior Jackson Balfour earned 20 team points and 2nd place at 145#. Balfour earned two first period pins, but then dropped the finals match.
Junior Jimmy Benne earned 16 team points and 2nd place at 138#. In his first match Benne battled back from 3-6 deficit to win in Sudden Victory Overtime 8-6. In a stacked bracket he won his next 2 matches 8-6 and 5-1, but dropped the finals match 1-3.
Junior Nathan Crawford earned 20 team points and 3rd place at 195#. Crawford pinned his first opponent and dropped his next match. He then proceeded to pin his next 3 opponents to earn 3rd place.
Sophomore Nathan Groenke earned 19 team points and 3rd place at 220#. Groenke lost his first match but showed huge heart as he pinned his next 4 opponents to earn 3rd place.
Freshman Shawn Cervantez earned 18 team points and 3rd place at 106#. After dropping his first match, Cervantez pinned his way up the backside of the bracket to earn 3rd place.
Sophomore Aiden Mendez earned 16 team points and 3rd place at 132#. Mendez pinned his first opponent and dropped his next match. He battled back and won his next 2 matches to earn 3rd place.
Junior Jonathan Rivera earned 16 team points and 3rd place at 170#. Rivera got a first period pin, but then dropped the next match. He worked his way up the back of the bracket to earn 3rd place.
On the girls side Junior Ella Gransberry won her first match major decision 11-3, won her next 2 matches with 2nd period pins, but was unable to win the finals match, earning 2nd place at 128# and a huge 21 of Reagan’s 36 team points. Reagan Girls tied 14th place out of 22 teams, a close 2 points out of 13th place.
Your Rattlers are back at it tomorrow, November 23rd, with a head-to-head Tri meet versus New Braunfels High School and Houston Westside. First whistle at noon at New Braunfels Middle School Gym, 608 Settlers Crossing in New Braunfels.
