There was a lot to celebrate at Paesanos Restaurant as the Wrestling team looked back at the incredible 2023 Season. Varsity Boys went 10-3 in duals, took First Place at 5 Tournaments, including the District Championship for the third year in a row, and placed 4th in the Region. Varsity Girls were 10-3 in Duals and placed 5th in the Region. Reagan qualified 19 athletes for Regionals and 8 athletes for State, with 2 State Placers. Of the 40 Varsity wrestlers, 27 are Academic All-District. Junior Varsity won its FIFTH consecutive District Championship.
The Coach Hernandez Character Award is given to the Senior who embodies the work ethic, character and dedication of the late Assistant Coach Kevin Hernandez. The second recipient of this award is Paris Gonzalez. Ten athletes were inducted in to the Twenty-Pin Club for winning by pin 20+ times in a single season: Shobhana Spielmann, Nathan Almaguer, Jack Balfour, Ella Gransbery, Paris Gonzalez, Sawyer Peevy, Jimmy Benne, America Rodriguez, Leo Bisesi and Kayla Baker. Jimmy Benne and Nathan Almaguer joined 4 prior wrestlers to achieve 100 Wins – Benne holds the highest win record with 128 Varsity wins over his Reagan Wrestling career.
The Gillespie Award is given to the wrestler with the most grit to overcome adversity during the year. This year’s Award was given Leo Bisesi for wrestling heavy weight, often times giving up 60-70 pounds, fighting through and still pinning his opponents over 20 times. The Gable Award is given to one male and one female wrestler for their leadership and character on and off the mat. This year’s recipients are Sawyer Peevy and Shobhana Spielmann. The Most Outstanding Male Wrestler Award was given to Jimmy Benne for the second year in a row and the Most Outstanding Female Wrestler Award was given to Ella Gransbery.
