Representing Reagan in his third consecutive year, junior Jon Totorica, placed third in the UIL Region IV 6A Championships held on April 11th and 12th. Seeded 3rd in this tournament, Jon won decidedly in straight sets in the round of 16’s and quarters on the first day of the tournament. In the semi-finals on the second day, with only the top four seeds remaining in the draw, Jon faced Lathan Skrobacek, senior from Harlan High School and a Texas A&M commit. Digging deep with a determined attitude, Jon played a tough first set but lost 6-4 and then lost the second set 6-1. To determine third place, Jon played Luke Riezebeek, sophomore from Westlake High School. After an intense three sets, Jon won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The day wasn’t over after placing third, as Jon would face Marko Mesarovic, senior from Westwood High School and a Clemson University commit, in the playback for a chance to advance to State in second place. Jon lost the playback in straight sets and unfortunately, only the 1st and 2nd place winners advance to the 6A State Championships.
Making their appearance for the first time in Region IV Championships, sophomore Anish Sehgal (boys singles) and junior Amaya Yovanovich (girl singles) both had extremely tough first rounds, playing seeded players. Also making their first appearance as a pair, mixed doubles pair Paulina Razo-Zapata/Gavin Fonger, won 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before falling in the quarters.
Congratulations to our Rattler’s who represented Reagan so well, not only with their level of play, but with their conduct on and off the courts. Although the spring season is an individual season (whereas the fall is the team season), the majority, if not all of the varsity team members were out in full force supporting their five teammates. Proud of our Rattler’s!! Strike ‘Em!!
