Girls’ Basketball Standouts Bring Home Adidas Nationals Trophy, Iwuala MVP Championship Game

July 25, 2021

Two Rattler Girls Basketball standouts, Christeen Iwuala and Samantha Wagner, finished their club basketball season in the best way, helping their SA Finest team to win the Adidas Nationals Championships’ top division, 3SSB, in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday.

Team Cee Lou, named for SA Finest Coach Ray Caldwell’s daughter/elite college player Recee Caldwell, is filled with San Antonio area standouts, including Antonian’s Carleigh Wenzel, Judson’s Amira Mabry, Brandeis Alexis Parker, Wagner’s LA Sneed and FEAST’s Maddy Hanson. Club season for girls’ basketball begins as soon as high school season ends in February/March, takes a break in June and finishes in July.  July is the main NCAA exposure period for college coaches to watch the girls play for recruiting purposes.

Iwuala had a fantastic showing in the championship game, with 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals  in the 57-53 win against the Minnesota Metro Stars to garner Championship game MVP honors.

The other four games required squeaking past Massachusetts Rivals (52-51 in the semi-final) and Dallas-area Team Lex Tarheels (57-56), as well wins over Miami-area Team Knight (41-36) and Illinois-area Team All-In (57-40).

For the tournament, Iwuala averaged 7.6 points/6.6 rebounds/1.0 blocks.  Wagner averaged 9.2 points/10.2 rebounds/2.0 assists/1.4 steals/1.0 blocks.

Congratulations Ladies!  We cant wait for high school season!
