Reagan Varsity boys and girls Wrestling competed Friday and Saturday at the 21st Annual CyFair Tournament, the largest high school wrestling tournament in the country. This tournament had 81 schools from all over Texas competing over 2 days and was the toughest competition short of the UIL State tournament. Our wrestlers battled hard and we had 4 boys and 3 girls go on to wrestle the 2nd day of the tournament with 3 ultimate placers.
For the girls, sophomore Shobhana Spielmann was your CyFair Champion in the 107 bracket. Spielmann went 5-0, pinned her first 3 opponents, won an exciting semifinal match in overtime and then secured her First place victory with yet another win by pin.
Two others girls were battling on Saturday. Sophomore Libertad Rodriguez (138) went 3-2, making it to Saturday after an exciting overtime victory in Consolation Round 3. Sophomore Mekyala Garcia (152) went 5-2 battling the whole way up the consolation bracket and making it to the penultimate match, falling just short of the placing rounds.
On the boys side there were 2 individual placers. Senior Bryce Whitethorn(126) went 5-2 and placed 7th, winning by decision 7-0, He made it to the 7/8 match by winning the penultimate consolation round 8-0 after dropping his quarterfinals match. Junior Grant Schneiders(144) went 7-2 and placed 7th. Schneiders battled up the back of the bracket winning 5 straight matches (3 of them by pin). After losing the last consolation bout to get into the 7/8 match, he secured 7th with a 10-5 win.
Two other boys were battling Saturday as well. Senior Connor O’Brien(132), who reached the 100 Varsity win mark for his high school career, went 4-2, narrowly missing the placing rounds by dropping the penultimate consolation round in a hard fought 1-2 loss. Senior Ben Taylor (120) went 4-2, and had 3 straight wins on the back side of the bracket to make it to Saturday but narrowly lost the first match of the second day.
