SAN ANTONIO – Emotions were already high for Reagan High School tight end Eric Witherspoon before Friday night’s Region 4 championship game against Judson High School.
As he walked toward his team’s sideline before the national anthem, the public address announcer drew his attention when he heard a similar name called out.
His father, Army Col. Eric Witherspoon, had just returned from a 10-month tour in Afghanistan to see him play.
After the words sank in, Eric turned to see his father at the 50-yard line where they met in a long embrace.
“It means the world to me,” said the elder Witherspoon. “I was over there and I was supposed to be back right before Christmas but I got permission to leave a little earlier and I was hoping I would get back to see one game.”
