Boys Soccer edge out John Jay, advance to regional finals tourney

April 8, 2015

Reagan is headed back to the regional tournament for the first time in three years, and it earned the trip thanks to its flair for the dramatic.

The Rattlers outlasted Jay 3-2 on Tuesday at Farris Stadium in a Class 6A third-round contest that was decided on penalty kicks. Reagan won the extra session 9-8, and is headed to the Region IV-6A tournament Friday and Saturday in Brownsville.

Reagan, in the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in 14 seasons, will play Brownsville Rivera (24-0-0), No. 2 in SIMA Fab 50 national rankings, in the regional semifinals.

Derek Burris’ late in regulation tied the game at 2-2 after Jay – which was seeking its third trip to regionals in four seasons – scored two straight goals to take a 2-1 advantage after Christian Dwarica had scored to give Reagan a 1-0 after the teams played to a scoreless first half.

Neither team scored in overtime, forcing the outcome to be determined by PKs.

The Rattlers will face Brownsville Rivera in the 6A Boys Soccer Region IV Seimfinals on Friday at 5pm at Brownsville Sports Park.
