Your Rattler Wrestling team left Reagan’s parking lot at 2:30am last Saturday to compete at Bryan High School in the tough Doc Hess Classic. Boys Varsity placed 10th out of 44 with 90.5 points and Girls Varsity placed 26th out of 44 with 30 points. Boys Junior Varsity also had a fantastic showing with 3 First Place Finishers and 1 Third place finisher.
JUNIOR JIMMY BENNE took home First Place at 138#, scoring 26 Team Points. Benne pinned his first three opponents to get into the finals match against Pflugerville’s Martinez. Benne hit a low single with 7 seconds left in the 1st period for a 2 point takedown. Second period Martinez chose bottom and managed an escape point. Entering the 3rd period up 2-1, Benne chose bottom and got the escape about half way through to end the match with a 3-1 victory.
JUNIOR NATHAN ALMAGUER brought home Third Place at 152#, scoring 17 Team Points. Almaguer received a bye and won his first match by 16-5 Major Decision, but dropped his second match. Working up the Consolation side of the bracket Almaguer got a pin with 28 seconds left in the 1st period to get to the 3rd place match. Almaguer got an late takedown and 2 nearfall points to go into the 2nd period up 4-0, but then gave up a takedown and 4 nearfall points to find himself trailing 4-6 going into the 3rd. Almaguer rallied to get the pin and 3rd place victory 42 seconds into the 3rd period.
JUNIOR ELLA GRANSBERY took home Fourth Place at 128#, scoring 13 Team Points. Gransbery received a bye and beat her next opponent with a 1st period pin. After dropping the semi-final match, Gransbery got a 2nd period pin to get into the 3rd place match where she unfortunately lost after battling deep into the 3rd period.
Junior Varsity’s First Place Winners are SOPHOMORE BRYCE WHITETHORN, FRESHMAN MASON HINSHAW, and SENIOR MAVERICK WHITETHORN. Junior Varsity’s SOPHOMORE AIDEN MENDEZ brought home Third Place.
