Senior Aryiel Sherman has committed to continue her track and field jumping career as well as her academic career at Abilene Christian University. Aryiel’s jumping career began in seventh grade when her middle school coach believed she would be a good fit for the event. One of Aryiel’s biggest inspirations is her mom, whose determination and dedication in life motivates her daily. Her favorite athlete is Olympic Gold Medalist, Charles Austin (high jumper) because of his resilience through his knee injury.
Aryiel’s senior year has been full of accomplishments, most recently winning 1st place at Regionals with a high jump of 5 ‘8″. This mark ties her personal best and ranks #2 in Reagan High School history for the high jump. One of Aryiel’s favorite track memories was winning first place at the district meet just one day after being cleared to compete following brain surgery.
“Aryiel is one of Reagan’s most accomplished field-event athletes; however, it’s her true passion for competition and her goal-oriented mindset that sets her apart and has been a shining example for her Reagan teammates,” Reagan Head Coach Jen McHugh said. “Aryiel’s ‘do-what’s-necessary’ fire keeps her aim singularly focused and will serve her well at ACU, as it has at Reagan. We are excited for Aryiel and look forward to watching her continue to grow at ACU.”
Aryiel will continue her athletic journey at ACU under Coach Miles Smith, who joined the program in 2024. “It’s a joy to have Aryiel joining us,” Coach Smith said. “The first thing that stood out to me is her thirst to be great. She embodies everything you could want in a student-athlete. She’ll walk in the door and instantly be a top contender in the high jump at both the conference and regional levels. Aryiel is a natural leader,” Smith added. “She sets high standards for herself and those around her and is willing to help bring others up with her. She’s an emotionally healthy young lady with an incredibly supportive family. A perfect fit for ACU Track. We’re excited to have her!”
When asked what she is most excited about at ACU, Aryiel said, “I’m most excited to contribute and be a part of an exceptional track program.”
With her determination, resilience, and passion for the sport, Aryiel has already built an impressive legacy at Reagan. As she begins this next chapter at Abilene Christian University, there is no doubt she will continue to inspire those around her while reaching even greater heights.
