We had the opportunity to talk with Elissa Barbosa from Reagan’s class of 2018. Elissa continues her track record of success in both academics and volleyball at Georgetown University. She’s made an impact on the court with impressive stats and was named both years to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team! Q: What are you studying at Georgetown?
A: I’m majoring in Government. I’m still deciding what area of government, but I’m getting great experience this summer as a legislative intern at the Texas State Capital.
Q: What has been your most exciting moment in college volleyball?
A: During my Freshman year we played our rival, Villanova at their school. We were down 2 sets and came back to win the match. It was an exciting victory!
Q: What would you say is the biggest difference between playing high school and collegiate sports?
A: You really need to figure out how to manage your time effectively. When you go from practice in the morning to class and then back to practice in the afternoon, you don’t have alot of extra time. My teammates were so helpful with advice and tips for managing both academics and volleyball. Also, in college, the level of competition is so much higher than HS. Everyone is older, taller, stronger, and more skilled, which makes the competition more intense.
Q: Which Reagan tradition meant the most to you?
A: Before every volleyball game, our team always did a “We Ready” chant. It got everyone excited for the game!
Q: What has your experience been like during the Covid-19 shutdown?
A: I was disappointed to have to leave school during last semester because of Covid. Since then, our Georgetown training staff has been sending our team daily workouts to do at home. We’ve really had to get creative with training. I’m hoping to go back at the end of August, but things could change so I have to plan for both scenarios.
Q: What is your message to current Rattlers about competing at the next level?
A: If you’re thinking about playing at the next level, you have to be ready for a huge commitment. At the same time, it’s rewarding because of the people you meet, the experience, and being a part of the team.
Thank you Elissa for sharing your experiences. We hope you get another fantastic season with the Georgetown Hoyas!
