Wrestling EOY Honors

On Thursday March 7th the wrestling team celebrated their season at Canyon Springs Country Club.  The Rattlers had a strong season on the mat and in the classroom with numerous Top 10 tournament finishes, and winning Dual Records on both girls and boys sides,

The top 2 awards for our wrestling teams were awarded. They are Wrestler of the Year (highest point scorer) and The Gable Award (Excellence, character, Grit, and determination).

Sophomore Shobhana Spielman and Junior Grant Schneiders were Wrestlers of the Year.  Coach Miller commented for Spielman that as the season wore on “people just wanted to get at least to the second period before getting pinned”, while he said of Schneiders “I love seeing this guy compete, we expect continued great things from him next year”.

Sophomore Mekyela Garcia and Senior Connor O’Brien were the Gable Award winners. Of Garcia, Coach Miller commented “fierce competitor, brought it every match” and of O’Brien “tremendous toughness and determination all four years of his varsity career”

Two Senior Awards were also given:

The Coach Hernandez Character award named for our beloved former assistant coach was given to Senior Ben Taylor for his “tremendous character and work ethic”.

The Bill Gillespie Award named for the founder of SA wrestling whose grandson wrestled at Reagan was given to Senior Adam Aguirre for his “Can do attitude, and willingness to do whatever the coaches asked of him for the team”.

Further Awards and Honors:

Seniors Connor O’Brien and Bryce Whitethorn were each given their “100 Wins” plaque a copy of which will be displayed in the trophy case at Reagan.

Five wrestlers achieved the “20 pin” club for the year. So Shobhana Spielman-40, So Mekyela Garcia-30, So Hannah Dunn-23, Jr Grant Schneiders-22, Sr Ben Taylor-20, and Sr Bryce Whitethorn-20.

14 Rattlers made Academic All-District and 5 Seniors were nominated to the All-State Academic team (Connor O’Brien, Noah Hyslop, Kaiser Jabour, and America Rodriguez).

2 time state qualifier and state placer Sophomore Shobhana Spielman was also nominated to the All-Elite team for the State.
