Varsity Boys Punch State Ticket

October 26, 2023

Congratulations to the Ronald Reagan 2023 varsity boys cross country team, who took third place at the regional meet in Corpus Christi and are headed to the state meet in Round Rock on November 4th!

It was a rough start when the starter gun fired two extra shots due to an athlete making contact with another causing a fall. The extra shots fired signals the athletes to stop running and restart. 189 runners made their way back to the line to start the race again. All the adrenaline that was expelled during this situation can have a negative effect on athletes.  Senior, Sebastian Gamiz said “When I heard the two gunshots fire to restart, I was for sure frustrated; but quickly redirected my thinking to keep my mood positive. While doing this I realized I had just ran one of the best practice strides of my life.” Outstanding redirections like this helped Reagan secure a ticket to State.

Reagan’s top runner, Junior, Gavin Chapa, said “Hard races like today show how tough a team really is and I’m very excited to see how our team performs at such a high level at the state meet.”

Seb Gamiz, “Going into state I’m going to first celebrate with my parents. They give me everything I need to be able to be in this position. Then I’m going to have the best ten days of training to get ready for state. It’s gonna be an awesome two weeks.”

Senior, Bryce Williams, said “From the start of the season going to state was always the goal. We wanted to be the first Reagan team to go the state as a team. I’m excited and looking forward to competing against the best runners in the state.”

It’s interesting to add that despite Reagan being District Champs, they were not predicted to punch the state ticket. They are by no means the underdog; but sure came out and proved that they are a force to be reckoned with and will not be overlooked.

There was much celebrating when the results were posted. Parents cheered and watched as the team FaceTimed former teammates to share the news. There is a brotherhood on this team that is unmatched. They support each other’s wins and lift each other up when needed. So much sportsmanship and heart… gives us hope for the future. Keep leading the way young people.
Congratulations and good luck at state! Strike ‘em.
