Last week Reagan Wrestling traveled to Cypress, TX to compete in the Cy-Fair Invitational, the largest Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament in the Country. The Boys’ Team placed 14th out of 79 teams, and the Girls’ Team placed 32nd out of 83 teams.
Senior Captain Sawyer Peevy, 215# took 2nd place, scoring 28 of Reagan’s 108 total team points. After receiving a bye, Peevy won his next 2 matches by Major Decision, 10-2 and 9-0 respectively. He then pinned his next opponent to get to the Quarterfinals where he won handily by a 6-0 Decision. The finals match was a battle, and Peevy came up just short, losing by 0-1 decision, the only point the result of a stall call.
Senior Captain Jimmy Benne, 144# took 5th place, scoring 20.5 team points. Benne blew through his first three opponents with 2 pins and a 15-0 Tech Fall. In the Quarterfinals he beat his undefeated Cypress Lakes opponent with a 8-4 Decision. He dropped the Semifinal match with a 3-7 decision, and was edged out of the Consolation Semifinal with a 3-4 Decision loss. He again faced Cypress Lakes in the 5th place match, which he won with a 9-4 Decision.
Senior Captain Ella Gransbery, 132# took 6th place, scoring 24 of Reagan’s 69 total team points. Gransbery received a bye and pinned her next two opponents. After dropping the Quarterfinal match, she notched two more pins before losing the Consolation Semifinal. Unfortunately she lost the 5th place match to take home 6th place.
Freshman Shobhanna Spielmann, 100#, took 7th place, scoring 21 team points. Spielmann opened her first Cy-Fair with 2 pins, but dropped her Champion Round 3 match. Showing grit, she worked up the backside of the bracket with 2 more pins and an exciting 8-3 Decision. Spielmann lost Consolation Round 7, which put her in the 7th place match where she finished the Tournament with yet another pin to earn 7th place.
“I am really happy with how we performed at Cy-Fair,” said Head Coach Paul Miller. “It was a great test for our team and gives us an idea of what will be down the road, especially at the State Tournament.” The Rattlers return home to the mat room to prepare for the rest of the season – startinig with a Varsity Tri-Dual on Thursday January 12th at 4:00pm at Madison, JV Volunteer Invitational on Friday January 13th at 4:00 at LEE, and Varsity Volunteer Invitational on Friday January 14th at 9:00am at LEE.
