Spirited. Intense. Exciting.
That’s the best way to describe the atmosphere in the gym last night as the varsity boys basketball team took on the New Braunfels Unicorns in the first round of the playoffs.
It was evident from tip off that this game was going to be a fight. With both teams aware of what was at stake, they battled back and forth for the lead. New Braunfels pulled ahead, ending the first quarter with an eight point margin (11-19) over the Rattlers. Reagan answered in the second quarter though, scoring 22 points to the Unicorns 11, setting them up for a 33-30 halftime lead.
The Rattlers brought extra determination to start the second half. They held on to their lead, ending the third quarter with a five point advantage (43-38). New Braunfels refused to give up, clawing their way back to tie and eventually take the lead for a short time late in the fourth. The Rattlers hit clutch free throws in the game’s final minute to seal the deal and claim the title of Bi-District Champions with a final score of 61-59.
This exciting victory also marked Coach John Hirst’s 450th career win. Congrats Coach!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support the team!
They will face Round Rock Westwood in round two of the playoffs this Friday (Feb. 25) at Buda Johnson High School. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
